Young Careerist

JOYCE BROKAW, CHAIR

YEAR 2008-2009

The new format for the young careerist program in its inaugural year, gave us one competition and that was at the Region III meeting in Milan. Hardeman County and Jackson each had a young careerist representative. Region II had possibilities but due to miscommunications ended up with no participants. Region I had one representative from Rockwood.  Ladies we are starting a new year and NOW IS THE TIME TO find a young woman that fits the following criteria.

  • Be between the ages of 21 and 35

  • Have been employed with at least one year of full-time work experience in her/his career area

  • Sign the BPW/USA Legislative Platform agreement. A Young Careerist Representative must review the BPW/USA Legislative Platform and pledge that she/he will not speak against platform items in her/his capacity as Young Careerist Representative, if selected.

Membership

The state YC Representative must have participated in the State Federation's selection program and must be a member of BPW/USA to be credentialed as the YC Representative of that state at The BPW/USA conference. E-members and members not affiliated with a Local Organization are eligible to participate in state and local competitions. (Local and state organizations may have differing membership policies for participation, but BPW/USA requires that State YC

  • Representatives participating in the BPW/USA YC Program be members in good standing.)

Established in 1964, Young Careerist involves a competitive selection process within local organizations, districts/regions and 54 state federations, resulting in the selection of a Young Careerist to represent each state federation at the BPW/USA annual National Conference. Candidates are judged in the following areas: written and biographical information, judges' interview, their ability to help others achieve, group interaction and prepared speeches on specific topics. The winner of the national competition will serve as the National Representative for BPW/USA and may attend functions in their official capacity.

Locals with computer access

Please visit the Virginia Allen Young Careerist Program site at www.bpwusa.org.  The Virginia Allen YC Manual was updated January, 2008.

Rationale:  Remember we "tweaked" the original format to spread the cost over three entities, and to cut down the time a young woman would need to spend away from job and family.  Thus encouraging more participation.

ATTENTION:  We want participatio, therefore as long as we know three weeks prior to your region meeting that your local will have representation, the young woman will be able to participate.
